Testimonials

“My son is currently in Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, awaiting a Bone Marrow Transplant. My wife informed me today that some of the umpires for tonight’s Cardinals game came by Children’s and were passing out Build-A-Bear®. Please pass along our heartfelt “Thanks!” to those that organized this visit, and to the umpires for giving their time. It made Andrew’s day!”

“Thanks so much for the Colorado Rockies tickets and VIP treatment for me and my Little Sister Na’Tajah. I appreciate your support of Big Brothers Big Sisters, and it’s so cool that you are able to provide special opportunities like this. We had a really great time! It was Na’Tajah’s first Rockies game, and folks kept teasing her about not expecting this type of VIP treatment each time.”

“I think it’s safe to say that late in every baseball season we all get to that point where we simply want the season to end.  Many times, to help get through this point of the season, we put our heads down, put the blinders on and just trudge through the remaining days and games.   It was August 10th, ‘The Dog Days Of Summer’ and it was exactly one of those, ‘Put The Blinders On’ days in San Francisco.  This meet and greet with The Larkin Street Youth Group was suppose to be with a group of 6 individuals.  Well, before I got out of our locker room door I could see we had only 2 kids show up.   From the beginning I took on a negative demeanor because what was suppose to be a group of 6 is now only 2, its mid August and well you get the point, right?  Like all my game day experiences  I started with the usual hello’s and how are you doings to feel the kids out and assess their level of interaction.  Much to my surprise this meeting quickly changed into the BEST Blue Crew ticket experience I’ve done since this program within UMPS CARE began.  Right out of the gates both young men were asking really good questions, looking around and really taking in the whole experience.  They couldn’t seem to get enough of what they were seeing and being so close to the action truly had them fired up and ready to go.  As with all of the game day visits both young men were already holding their UMPS CARE  bag full of goodies that we provide so they can take in and enjoy the whole game day experience.  About half way through the meet and greet, and I have no idea why it took so long to notice, but it hit me that one of the guys had on a back pack that looked so unbelievably full you couldn’t have possibly stuffed another item into it while the other young man was carrying your typical black garbage bag full of something.  Again, I don’t know if I was so locked into the end of the season that it didn’t register right away but it finally dawned on me what was in the back pack and the garbage bag and why this group was called, The Larkin Street Youth.  As it turns out their entire lives were tucked away in one back pack and and one 13 gallon garbage bag.  I know this because their chaperone said as much later.  You see, both those kids were homeless so any and all possessions they had in their lives were able to fit into those two totes and be carried into the ballpark.  They had to carry their stuff with them because there was either no where else to leave it or they just didn’t trust people enough to leave their life belongings somewhere out of their sight.  Again, they carried everything they owned in their lives in a back pack and a 13 gallon garbage bag.  Imagine that for a minute but then imagine this as well.  I spent about 15 to 20 minutes with those two young men and I can’t remember one second when they weren’t smiling, asking questions and seemingly having the time of their lives.  Needless to say this left a mark on me.  This was a day when these two young men changed MY life, not me changing or helping theirs.  This changed the way I will forever look at the homeless.  This also caused me to go back into that locker room where I quickly bowed my head and thanked God for the many, many Blessings he’s given me and my family.  What I learned on August 10th is this.  What we do at UMPS CARE matters.  What we do at UMPS CARE is good and when you’re doing something good then you can’t get it wrong no matter what.  I also learned if you’re really lucky, while you’re out thinking you’re helping someone else you might end up being helped yourself.  August 10th in San Francisco was a good day!!!
