When the Atlanta Braves game against the San Francisco Giants was suspended for rain, a doubleheader was scheduled the following day. That was the day UMPS CARE Charities had planned to host a visit at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
Major League Baseball Umpire Stu Scheurwater made a point of making sure the kids undergoing treatment in the hospital would still have an amazing morning – even though he knew he had to work a doubleheader after the visit. The children and their caregivers were especially grateful to have him on site.
Scheurwater helped UMPS CARE deliver 100 Build-A-Bear furry friends to patients in addition to helping children select outfits for their new stuffed animal friends. Our partners from the Arby’s Foundation helped us with the fun and handed out cozy socks, magnets and coupons to the kids.
Since UMPS CARE was founded 20 years ago, umpires have delivered 25,190 Build-A-Bear furry friends to children in pediatric hospitals across the country and in Canada.

Through their grant support, we have been able to host these visits at hospitals across the country and deliver a lot of joy to sick children and their caregivers. Aimee and Joseph joined Stu and provided volunteer support from Inspire Brands in Atlanta – and added some Arby’s goodies for the kiddos!
